Ringedseal flicked a droplet of blood off her whiskers and swiped her tongue around her lips. The vole's blood left a dark red stain on the white fur of her chin. One more for the fresh-kill pile tonight. . . With a broad forepaw she pushed a few more pine needles over her cache of prey. A small hare, a sparrow, and a vole, now two voles. The large she-cat blended in well under the dark pines with her spotted silver tabby coat. The prey never saw her coming - rather, they heard or smelled her. Other animals had always seemed to smell her before any other cats around her - maybe her cat scent was stronger than usual or something.
Above her, a group of birds exploded out of the treetop. She jumped around at the sudden noise - it had been all but silent in the forest. OK, that had not been her. And birds couldn't smell, right? Was somebody out there? A badger or fox probably couldn't get this deep into Glacierclan territory without someone finding a trace of their scent, so that ruled out the two most likely predators. She couldn't smell another cat, though. . .
There - something moved in the dark. She narrowed her green eyes and squinted into the shadows. A pair of glowing eyes blinked into existence - a pair of eyes much higher above the ground than her head. For a moment, she stared at them, frozen - and then a deer took a step forward that put her into the light.
Ringedseal heaved a sigh. Great Starclan, can't even smell a deer. Call yourself a warrior? For a moment she watched the creature sniff the ground for food. There was nothing for a deer to eat here, was there? And didn't deer move in packs? A sudden idea occurred to her - could they eat it? She sized the deer up doubtfully. It was easily ten times her size (though she was really mostly long legs anyway), but it didn't have any horns and wasn't paying the least bit of attention to her. Warriors occasionally brought back deer kits too, didn't they? Fawns, that what they were called. And they just sit there and let cats walk right up, or wobbled away on long, spindly legs.
She took a slow step forward, but stopped when she noticed its hooves. Ouch. That could hurt.

great for solving problems -- Racing through the forest, testing her endurance (and just having a good time). Found herself often tripping over, well, herself. Discouraged and blaming her StarClan forsaken paws.
Although she slowed down significantly as she got deeper. Now she was winded and the rush was pretty much gone. Trying to control her panting, she spotted something she thought could be a vole.
Crouched down, a grin slowly crossing her face. The calico had never really caught anything by herself yet. Trying to remember the few things she'd learn, to too in a whiff of the air.
But smelt something else. Another GlacierClan cat. Some of her excitement dropped as she straightened out her posture and tried to follow the scent. With a sigh, the apprentice came up from behind, noticing it was a warrior named Ringedseal.
“Hey—“ Hauntpaw froze dead in her tracks. That animal was enormous. A wide grin appeared on her face. “Can I help?” She whispered, orange eyes fixed on the deer, glowing with enthusiasm.

Ringedseal settled down on her haunches and sat watching the deer. It continued to ignore her and was now trying to pull a small scraggly plant, the kind that usually lived in open deciduous forests, out of the ground. She could go for the throat, try to make it bleed to death. It worked on cats. . .but then cats were her size and this thing had a neck as big around as her head. She could get on its back and try to kill it by biting its spine. . . She could try to get get teeth between its vertebrae, and then it would drop, unable to run. Behind her, she heard a light rhythmic thumping noise - pawsteps fast approaching. A small cat by the sound of it. A small cat that kept tripping over its own paws. She flicked an ear it its direction, trying to figure out who it was. Well, who do we know that trips over their own paws when they run? Hauntpaw. Right.
Ringedseal turned around just in time to see the ginger, black and white she-cat come into view. She groaned inwardly as she noticed the look on the apprentice's face. The clan wouldn't like it if Ringedseal returned with an apprentice with her skull bashed in, would they?
"Help with what?" she meowed innocently, standing up and stretching. "I was just wondering what this deer was doing out here, alone." They sure do show up at the craziest times. I could have fed the entire clan tonight. And yet. . .this could show Sapphirestar she had what it took to be a mentor. The spotted tabby frowned. If they could pull this off, it would definitely prove her worth as a Glacierclan warrior. . .

i'm on my knees --
Angrily, she puffed up the fur on her neck. "It didn't cross your mind?!" Hauntpaw had to convince Ringedseal. "You couldn't take it down alone!" She urged quietly, "I'm not totally useless!"
Stared at the deer, watching it twitching its ears while it grazed. Wondered what it would even be possible. Eyes darted to the hard stone-like paws. Eye twitched slightly.
Small, pink tongue swiped across her lips. "Imagine, we could have a celebration. Maybe Sapphirestar will be inspired to make new warriors! Not that I'm read for it..." the apprentice had to sullenly admit.

Ringedseal frowned and glanced at the deer again. Hauntpaw had a point. . .but would she really be that much help? Ringedseal wasn't willing to risk accidentally causing the death of an apprentice, so she wouldn't tell Hauntpaw to get where the deer could kick her. . .but if the apprentice got on its back she could distract the deer enough for Ringedseal to get at the throat. . .
"Look, if we attack this thing you've got to do exactly what I say, OK?" she finally meowed. "That means no creative attack patterns or anything, got it?" Taking a deep breath, she turned back to the deer. It seemed to notice that something was up; it hadn't run away, but had stopped foraging and was watching the two cats warily. Apparently it had never been attacked by a cat before.
"OK, I'll move over to the side, in front of it. When I give the signal, you jump on its back and try to get your teeth in its spine. It'll try and run fast, so I'll jump up and grab its throat." The she-cat paused. Had she missed anything important? "Oh, and one more thing: if I miss it and it runs get the Place of No Stars off it, OK?" The last thing they needed was for an apprentice to be carried off into the sunset on the back of a deer. It would make for a good story, though. . .

you say we're not responsible -- Orange ears pricked up and her eyes glowed with excitement. "Yes ma'am!" she purred. With one last glance at the deer and a wide grin, she darted off into the undergrowth.
With grace, she leaped onto a tree a few fox-length away from the large prey. Her claws dug into the bark, sending some off it and onto the floor below. Being more careful as she got towards the top. She climbed out on a branch. She tried to steady and pace herself. Positioning herself as close to over the deer as she could.
Eyes looked longingly at the back, the spine, of the deer. Studied it. Turned her head toward the warrior, grinning from the tree, waiting for the cue.

Ringedseal watched as Hauntpaw darted up a tree, shaking her head. Apprentices. The younger cat had chosen a good place to wait and attack from, though. The tabby backed away behind a tree (hopefully fading into the darkness from the deer's point of view) and looked for a good place to ambush the deer herself. When Hauntpaw jumped on it, it would probably at least twist its head around to see what was on its back. Then Ringedseal could jump. But what if it just took off? She wished she had seen a wolf or bear hunting a deer before. . .well, no, she didn't. If the wolf or bear had missed the deer they might have decided cat was just as good.
Ringedseal continued further into the forest so she could loop around the deer without it seeing her. She didn't know how good its sense of smell was, but hopefully it wouldn't notice her over the bitter smell of the pine trees. Circling, she tried to find a place where she could see and be seen by the apprentice. When she was at a fourty five degree angle with Hauntpaw, she came back in towards the deer and crouched behind a tree. The deer was about to run anyway, and it wouldn't do any good if she wasn't even close to it when it did. The she-cat glanced up and flicked her tail sharply to catch Hauntpaw's attention. When she had it she jerked her head sharply towards the deer. Jump! Ringedseal unsheathed her claws, ready to pounce.

this feeling's tearing me up
-- Her eyes almost didn't catch Ringedseal's subtle motion. But her head snapped towards the tail flickering. With a mischievous grin, Hauntpaw took a step forward on the branch, miscalculating her stepping of her large paws, and slipping.
For half a second she fell through the air on her side, but her reflects gave her the opportunity to land on her paws. She was able to, just in time. The calico's claws dug deep into the thin fur, which gave her the advantage. The skin wasn't buried far under and she was glad to get such a great grip.
And she needed it.
The deer then leaped in shock, prancing back and farther, but Hauntpaw wouldn't've qualified to a far enough, or fast enough, pace to let go.
The apprentice could only hope her assumptions were right.

The apprentice grinned and took a step forward. Didn't she appreciate that this thing was much bigger than both of them put together? The calico suddenly seemed to lose her footing. Ringedseal gasped as Hauntpaw slipped and fell out of the tree. No- She didn't have time to finish the thought, however, for the apprentice flipped in midair and landed square on the deer's back. Starclan.
The deer leapt up in the air, and instead of bolting started backing up and trying to knock the apprentice off. Ringedseal crouched lower for a second, aiming, then pushed off the frozen ground. She flew through the air, forelgs stretched out to grab the deer's neck. The thing jerked back and squealed in terror, moving its head as far away from her as possible. She collided with its lower neck and chest, far off her mark.
Damnit- She grabbed hold anyway, biting its neck, but just got a mouthful of loose skin. She almost lost her grip as it suddenly seemed to slip backwards - it had colided with a tree and was struggling not to fall back onto its rump.

break your happy home
-- The apprentice let out an ooph! as the deer collided with the tree. She'd be thrown against it's back on the impact. Orange eyes looked up at the scuff (at least, it would be, if the deer was a cat), and she let out a toothy grin.
The deer's thin legs were making a rut in it's futile attempt of stay afoot. And once it fell, Hauntpaw would have a difficult grip (either she's scratch off the deer's skin or yank out her claws). So, the moment before it 'sat' down, she dug all four paws' claws into the deer's back, leaping and biting down on the back of it's neck.
Now the deer fell on it's bottom, and Hauntpaw's small size let her back paws stand on it's shoulders. With her back claws, she continuously scratched it's shoulders. The calico didn't quite know if Ringedseal had any progression in taking down the creature, but she prayed she was helping. At least, the deer was bleeding more and more.

Ringedseal gripped tightly onto the deer's chest as it fell heavily onto the ground, like a cat would sit. The deer, however, obviously was not made for it. It's long, skinny legs stuck out, just waiting to be snapped. It twisted its head around awkwardly and seemed to try to bite at something on its back. Hauntpaw. Blood was seeping down through the its fur from its shoulders. A bunch of ideas ran wildly through her head. Try to pull it sideways down to our level. It's going to just get up and run. Break one of its legs? Could she get down there fast enough? Was she even heavy enough to do so? Sure, she was plenty heavy. She was muscled like a tom. Those hooves would hurt. Gotta move now. Only got one chance. Wait for it to turn around again.
This was so stupid. I'm the forest's biggest idiot. The deer twisted around toward Hauntpaw again and Ringedseal took her chance. She flung herself down, aiming as best she could for a long, stick-like leg. Her weight came down with a satisfying snap. She jumped away as quickly as she could, visions of a smashed skull dancing in her head. "Hauntpaw!" She frantically motioned for the apprentice to move. Starclan, Ringedseal, quit freaking out! Use your brain! Finish what you started! Its leg's broken, you two can finish it off!
[[Ack, my brain's broken.]]

The apprentice's body twisted a the deer attempted to bit at her. A chill of panic and sly excitement ran through her as she struggled to stay on. At this point, she'd given up on scratching and just dug her claws into the deer's skin. Held on for dear life.
The moments seem to pass in very slow seconds. Now had Hauntpaw's eyes shut closed, maybe afraid to see what was happening. Perhaps all the movement had given her a headache. The latter was more plausible, seeing as how she couldn't really organize what was bothering her.
Eyelids snapped open she she heard a distinctive crack. Her stomach did back flips at the sound. She'd never broken a bone--at this point, she didn't know bones could break--but that sound was haunting. The apprentice was in a distracted daze for a moment, but the deer seemed to have stopped thrashing as much.
Probably due to the pain it was now experiencing. The GlacierClan cat heard Ringedseal call her name and she broke out of her trance-like state. Looking over towards the warrior, she nodded, leaping as far as she could from the deer. Landed ungracefully, stumbling slightly. But soon redeemed herself and whipped around to face the large, maimed prey.
"What now?!" Yowled towards the silvery she-cat.
