[I'm gonna write the melody]
"Aw, c'mon--"
"No."
"Pleas--"
"No."
"... But why not--"
"No."
Firesmoke sighed as he laid down across from the she-cat, his eyes narrowed in a mocking glare. "You're no fun."
"And you are barbaric," Raincloud said after swallowing her bite of mouse.
[That's gonna make history]
"How do you figure that, sister dear?" Firesmoke rolled onto his back, stretching his paws out in the air, enjoying the sight of his claws extending. "Fighting is part of our life, you know."
"I agree to that," Raincloud's soft voice said, her tongue working on cleaning her silver pelt. "I do think you enjoy it a little too much, though..."
"I do not," the bronze tom said, scoffing. "I'm just bored. And do not suggest hunting," Raincloud closed her mouth, "because we both know that won't be fun for me. I'll just get frustrated, and then it won't be fun for anyone."
"Practicing would be good for you," the female murmured.
"As it would be for you." Firesmoke grinned and rolled back over onto his belly when Raincloud's ears flattened at his words. "C'mon, battle practice isn't so bad--"
"No."

Come on, come on, come on What you gonna do with your life?
Sootstar leaped down from the high rock, after just organising a hunting partol with some of the older apprentices. It seemed only sun-rises since the last warrior and apprentice ceremonies, but it seemed like they were due again. They all grew to quick. Six moons was nothing to Sootstar anymore. Why was it that the older she got, the faster time slipped by? She thought about this, wondering if it were a blessing or a curse as she made a circuit of the camp. She stopped occasionally, poking at loose patches of rocks around the edge of camp, or listening to the apprentices showing off their latest moves or the kits playing opposing clans in a mock battle. She smiled quietly to herself remembering her own kit-hood since joining the clan. It was nothing less that unfair, that an outsider who'd never dreamed of reaching the moon had become leader of the clan, while some of the true clan-born cats, who's main aspiration in life is to lead their clan get stuck as a warrior for all their life. Sootstar swished her silver and black tail slowly, part of her wishing she could somehow change the past and that her burdens were someone elses. She closed her eyes, imagining if she'd have stayed as a warrior. Only one image formed in head. Kits.
Come on, come on, come on Chasing sparks in the night
The one thing Sootstar regretted most about her life was her lack of off-spring. She'd always dreamed of having kits, but hadn't really thought of that when she'd accepted Tigerstar's offer of becoming deputy. She hadn't thought of lots of things. When she was younger, when everyone was young, the life of a leader seemed filled with glory and power. She laughed one cold, hard laugh at the ignorant thoughts everyone shared. That she had though too; what seemed like so long ago. Two life-times ago to be precise. The young silver leader passed all thoughts of leadership out of her head and continued to circle the camp. Just behing the Elder's Den there was a small pile of falled rocky rubble, and the nursery needed re-lining with feathers and moss in the walls. She made a mental note of this, to ask some apprenitces to fill the holes and shift the debris later.
His old man said tomorrow is a ride that goes nowhere
She stopped outside the Warrior's Den. Inside there was some nosie, sounded like friendly arguing. She poked her head inside, remembering the times when she had slept in here herself. There weren't many cats still in here; they were all probably out hunting, training apprentices or partoling borders. The famous brother and sister duo were there. Firesmoke and Raincloud got along famously. From the outside, they looked like they were constantly warring; but maybe that wasn't the case. Not always anyway. 'Hey, what are you two arguing about again. Firresmoke anoying you again?' Even since they were new-born kits, these two had argued. Their first words to each other were probably complaining to the oter about something. By the looks of it, Firesmoke was moaning to his sister about something, and Raincloud wasn't playing. Good on her, Sootstar thought. They had such opposing personalities, and yet the similarities were eerily alike where the occured. So like she had been with Jinxfire so long ago.
But I'll pull some strings, get blackbird wings
A thought suddenly struck Sootstar relating to the conversation she'd had earlier in her head. Time for ceremonies. Kits who'll be needing menotrs. I've got a pair of perfect candidates right here. She twitched her tail and could hear the doubt in her head as she'd seen Firesmoke rolling on his back before. 'How about you each have an apprenitce next time there's a litter ready? Maybe you could train them together? Or prehaps you'll just argue about the best measure of hunting and battle practice. How does that sound to eaither of you?'
And break us out of here

Patchpaw shot out of the apprentices' den at full speed, and nearly cannoned into Sootstar's side. Not realizing it was her leader, she meowed to Firesmoke, "You can teach me how to fight!! I'll listen!! I'll be real good, promise!!! Please please please please please plea-" Patchpaw looked to her side and noticed Sootstar. "Oh hello, Sootstar." She said slowly, bowing her head deeply. "Can I have a mentor? Please please please please please!!!" She looked up at Sootstar with wide eyes, and smiled. "I really really want one. Twinkletoes has been taking me out, but I want a mentor who I can nag, I mean ask, to take me out, and train me one on one!! Please!!!!" She threw herself onto the ground. "Please can I have a mentor!" She flipped over onto her back and smiled at Sootstar. She hoped she had gotten her words out.

Been all around the world and as a matter of fact
Sootstar's head was leaning to one side as she asked the question to Firesmoke and Raincloud. She thought that the best way for these two to get along well and brush up on their own skills would be for them to take time with a younger cat. She was still watching them considering an answer when she noticed a noise outside. Just as she was turning around to look at what the disturbance was; a small black and white cat came charging through the Warrior's Den, almost straight into her. As she was stood the the side in the shadows, her silver grey pelt was probaably to blended for Patchpaw to see. A slow smile twisted the corners of her lips as Patchpaw ranted on to Firesmoke. Patchpaw's old mentor, Redpelt, had recently moved to the Elder's Den, and so the bubbly young apprenitce was lefet without anyone to train her. All of the other mentors had shared her training; but she really needed one individual to spend time with her. Raincloud would probably be good for Patchpaw. And Firesmoke...He had such an apprenitce-like disposition himself. Maybe there was an apprenitce who acted more like a warrior than he did...Ivorypaw. Twinkltoes's daughter was a responsible and intelligent young apprentice. She was somewhat know-it-all though. Once Patchpaw had noticed her presence, the began to speak again.
There's only one place left, I want to go
'Yes Patchpaw, I'm sure we can sort a menotr out for you. I was just thinking that maybe raincloud and Firesmoke needed apprentices. Raincloud, would you like to train Patchpaw? She's learnt some things, but her training has been quite distrupted and lots of the older mentors have shared her training. I'm sure you'll do a good job with her. I can sort a ceremony out for later after we've shared-tounges. And you Firesmoke, I think I have the perfect apprenitce for you. Again, she's already started training, but with different mentors. I'll save it as a surprise for later I think.' Sootstar's ash grey pelt rippled as she surpressed giggles. It would be hard to see which was the mentor and which the apprentice with Firesmoke and Ivorypaw. But they would both do so much good for each other. Sure, there would be plent of personality clashes, but some of the words said in jest would ring so true. It would seem that Firesmoke would soon be learning a lot about himself.
I'm just a hometown boy, born a rollin' stone
She smiled as she sat down, ready for either of the terrile-twosome to say something. No doubt Firesmoke would protest about not knowing who was to be his first apprenitce. And of course Raincloud woul agree to anything the leader asked. Then Patchpaw, she would be jumping up and down and bouncing off the walls because she was happy about somthing. 'Hey, Patchpaw, why don't you tell me about the hunting trip to the ice-break earlier? Twinkletoes only gave me a brief explanation o how many voles there were. How many did you catch? Did you learn anything else while you were out there?' Sootstar had always loved spending time with the clan's kits and apprentices, even more so now that she could never me a part of it. Patchpaw was a lot like how her sister had been when the were kits together. Before they were seperated. But still, every cat was different, Sootstar was just seeing echos of personality of a character ho she greatly missed.

Patchpaw grinned. "Raincloud as my mentor!? Awesome!" She leaped forward and touched noses to Raincloud, smiling. She turned to leave, but heard Sootstar ask about the hunting trip. "Oh. My. Starclan. I had never seen so many voles!! I think I caught three. Ebonypaw caught... Two, and I think Ivorypaw caught three as well. I also learned how to stalk prey that wasn't mice. It's really handy! Umm, I also learned to be cautious and careful, so I won't slip on the ice. And Ivorypaw taught me that if I dug my claws into the ice, I wouldn't slide around! Everyone is so helpful!" She smiled. Taking a breath, she meowed, "How was your day, Sootstar?"
She liked to talk, yes, but she also loved to listen. She loved listening to the elders talk about age-old battles, and the senior warriors about new battles. It was all so interesting. Every aspect of clan life fascinated Patchpaw, and she wanted to learn it all, ever since she was a young kit in the nursery.

[This is the story of my life]
"Hey, I never annoy Raincloud!" Firesmoke grinned as Sootstar appeared before the siblings. "That's just not part of my charming personality."
Raincloud rolled her eyes at those words, a light smile playing on her face. Dipping her head to her leader, she said, "Hello, Sootstar. We're not really arguing. Firesmoke is just bored. When's the next time you're on a patrol?" she suddenly asked the tom.
"Dusk Patrol," was the prompt response. "Not for a little while yet. You can't rid of me that easily!"
"Who said I wanted to get rid of you?" Raincloud asked, batting at her brother's tail. He had no way to respond.
"Apprentices?" Firesmoke's ears perked up and he rolled back onto his feet. His eyes were shining with excitement. "Really? That'd be awesome! Yeah, Raincloud, we can practice together, or even switch apprentices for a day, because whoever my apprentice will be will definitely learn more about hunting from you."
"And vice versa in regards to battling techniques," Raincloud said. With a smile to Sootstar, the other she-cat began to say, "Thank you for considering us--"
[And I write it everyday] [/i] The warrior never finished, for young Patchpaw suddenly burst into the scene, begging for a mentor and for Firesmoke to teach her how to fight. Before Raincloud could so much as blink, Patchpaw was suddenly touching noses with her. "Me?" The realization of herself being Patchpaw's new mentor so suddenly hit Raincloud a few heartbeats after Sootstar made her little announcement. With a sheepish and gracious smile, Raincloud beamed at Patchpaw. "I'll certainly do my best to teach you all I know."
"Wow, that quick!" Laughing, Firesmoke nudged his sister. "Congrats!" At the mention of him receiving his apprentice later, the tom nodded to Sootstar. "Sounds great! I love nice surprises, haha!"Sootstar then began to ask Patchpaw about her hunting expedition with some of the other clan members, and Firesmoke settled down to listen with rapt attention. Raincloud was still wearing her gentle smile as the -- her -- apprentice rambled about voles and ice, amused at how energetic Patchpaw seemed to be like her brother. Patchpaw grinned at the pair. "Can we all go out on patrol?" She asked. "That'd be cool. Can we Sootstar? Can we? Can we?" She asked in her hyper voice. Suddenly, she took a deep breath. "Sorry, I got really excited there." She apoligized in a slightly slower voice. She shook her patchy head and grinned again. "It'd be cool to hang out with you two!" She smiled and bounced on her paws, laughing at herself.
It was a good life for Patchpaw. She had gotten to know most of the warriors through them taking her out to train, but now she had her own mentor. She felt like she finally belonged. It was a good, warm, fuzzy feeling. She grinned at herself again and shuffled her paws, anxious to head off somewhere.

Some day I'll be Saturday night
Sootstar smiled, making her look younger than she had ina long time. She was only young, but being leader had unnecessarily aged her, as it did everyone. A light flickered in her eyes, the pale blue coming alive and showing the brightness of her soul deep inide. The enthusiasm of the warriors and apprenitce alike was amazing to watch, and reminded the silver tabby of a time long ago to her. She'd progressed through the ranks of the clan especially quickly, and considering her kity-pet origin it was remerkable how she'd been acepted by Snow Clan and the other cats. Everyday, or whenever she though about the burdens she bore, or the setbacks she suffered alone, Sootstar though of the story of her life, and saw how outstanding it really wa that she'd come so far. She'd been given the exhaltation that oters in the clan dreamt of, and truly, she did apreciate it. Raincloud, Firesmoke and Patchpaw were showing her that again, as members of the vlan did with every sunrise. Seeing the clan from this angle, Sootstar would never give up what she had.
I'll be back on my feet I'll be doing alright
'Thank you. All three of you. It should be so much fun for you two to teach you pprenitces together, they'll get to learn so much. They'll get the best of both of you. I couldn't ask for better mentors for Patchpaw here and your apprentice too Firesmoke.' She smiled at them each in turn, thaning them all for being so cooperative. It really was a blesing to have such an effect on the members of the clan. Hopefully, Sootstar thought she tried to come across as a friend, or den-mate, rather than just a figure of authority. She never wanted o just seem like a bosy character who they must obey, she felt more like one of the everybodys to do that. Firesmoke and Raincloud for example were best friends and yet always arguing. In a disguised way, Sootsar was the same. She was their friend, but still persuaded everyon to follow the rules. I wonder if I am a god leader. I have such different methods to all of the other clans' leaders, or Snow Clan's leaders before me. Sometimes, I think it's a miracle that the world isn't falling apart around me.
It may not be tomorrow baby that's okay
She flinched as she surface back into the real world. She mised being just one of the crowd sometimes. Still, she was privilladged and wouldn't change it for anything. Except one thing, of course. 'You can join Firesmoke on the dawn patrol, instead of dusk. You'll be busy in ceremonies at dusk. Is that OK Patchpaw, Raincloud? And of course, the mystery apprenitce will too. Wherever you chose to go, make sure you chose your own paths, all of you.' She tilted her head questionningly and waited to see is dawn partol suited them all. Inside, she laughed. Would it really be such a good idea to mix up the apprentices and giv them the opposite mentor. Firesmoke was so lively, and battle orientated, whereas his apprenitce was so theoretical and know-it-all. Raincloud was a natural hunter, and Patchpaw wanted to learnt o fight, and was so lively. Still, it all made for an interesting combination of skills for the nex generation of warriors and queens.

[That's just one side of the story]
"Yes, no Dusk Patrol!"
"Firesmoke...!"
"Oh, don't get your tail in a bunch, Raincloud," [/color] the tom said, grinning. "You know I don't mind patrolling. I just prefer dawn to dusk, that's all. You ready to get up early, Patchpaw?"He noticed Raincloud roll her eyes just as much as he noticed her slight smile at his antics. He sat up straight, ears erect, chest puffed out. In a deep voice, he continued to talk to Patchpaw. "Alright, soldier," Firesmoke said, "are you ready for training? Are you ready to undertake structured challenges once again?" He was, of course but not unkindly, referring to her lack of having a permanent mentor for the past moon or so. He vaguely heard his sister try to muffle her giggles behind him. Firesmoke's maw quivered as he also tried to not laugh. [In this two story town][/blockquote] "Two Story Town," (c) Bon Jovi[/i]

Who's gonna save you when the stars fall from your sky?
Sootstar smiled. How could anyone argue that there was something better than this? Snow Clan was her life now, and Sootstar couldn't imagine living it anywhere else. Sat there watching, listening, laughing with Firesmoke and Raincloud, the small silver tabby knew why she'd been put here. Star Clan had given her a gift, and now it was her duty to share that gift with everyone she could. She was no more than puppet in the capable hands of Star Clan, simply channeling their energy and making things happen. And she was honoured to be their puppet.
Who's gonna pull you in when the tide gets too high?
Great Star Clan! What on earth have I done to these two apprentices by giving them over to you?' Sootstar faked a shocked expression and looked up at the setting sun, glancing at Firesmoke to see his reaction. With these two's ceremonies tonight, she would officially make Gingerkit her apprentice. Now that was going to be a challenge. For her to have to train a deaf aprentice would be difficult, and probably fustrating, but it was soething new for Sootstar, and to be the best leader that she could, she wanted to try everything and gain as many experiences as she could.
Who's gonna hold you when you turn out the lights?
She stood up ready to leave. Unfortuatley, Sootstar couldn't spend all day in the Warrior's Den just chatting like everyone else. There were patrols to organise, medicine supplies which she would help to check, kits and queens and elders who neded visiting and she would sort through the fesh-kill pile and get rid of anything too old. Even though leaf-bare was drawing in and prey was becoming scarce, she wouldn't want to risk anyone eating carrion. 'I think I will join you on the dawn patrol. And Heatherpaw can come too if she's free. She's young, and this is her first border patrol. But now, I'd better go and organise the dusk partol and prepare for the ceremonies later. I'll see you all then.' She dipped her head to each of them in turn and left te Warrior's Den. She was grinning like a mad cat as she headed over to the nursery, Most of the warriors who were around camp looked at her quizically because of the unusual spring in her step. She laghed ou loud a she realised how she must look. Still, what did she care what others thought about her?

Patchpaw grinned at Sootstar. "Of course it's okay! I'm so excited!!" She smiled at Firesmoke. "Yessir!" She sat up straight and clamped her paw to her forehead in a mock salute. Then she burst out laughing. "You guys are such goofs. It's going to be so much fun training with you." She gave a big grin to Raincloud, before skipping around Sootstar. "This is going to be awesome! I've never gone on such a big patrol before!" She skipped again, and stopped, drawing a deep breath. "I'm going to be in a ceremony.....again." She sang, before starting to skip again.
