One-hundred moons ago, GlacierClan was ruled by Winterstar, a huge gray tom with cold yellow eyes. Winterstar continued the reputation of his Clan that had been established by his ancestors countless moons ago. GlacierClan, the strong, the fierce.
He was replaced by his deputy, Shatteredsoul. Shatteredstar was a cruel and vicious leader, forcing the Clan into unnecessary battles and being brutal and bloodthirsty. In his short reign he killed many cats, before he was overpowered and exiled from the Clan. Left in shambles, GlacierClan experienced a short and brutal power-struggle until Lavendertail became the leader. But unknown to the Clan, Lavenderstar never received her nine lives from StarClan.
Exiled to the loner lands with a small band of followers, Shatteredstar recruited loners and rogues from the mountains and returned to the four Clans. There, he waged war on GlacierClan and the other three. He was slaughtered, and his followers disbanded once again. Lavenderstar was killed in the battle against him.
Hauntstar, a courageous tom, became leader in her absence. And Blizzardclaw, a young white she-cat who was the daughter of Winterstar, became deputy. GlacierClan quickly rebuilt itself under new leadership, but was unaware that trouble was brewing again in the loner lands.
Given a taste of the rich lands that the four Clans ruled, the loners that had once followed Shatteredstar came together to form ColdClan, lead by Curse and Captain Wolf. They recruited more cats, and soon became large enough to once again mount an attack against the four Clans.
ColdClan was much stronger than in the days of Shatteredstar, and it looked like the four Clans would break under their last attack. But instead, they found unlikely allies in the wolves of MoonPack. Destroyed again, ColdClan retreated when Curse and Wolf fell.
But the fight was not yet over. Wolves from AvalanchePack joined together with the ColdClan survivors, under their leader, Carner. But in the final battle, AvalancheClan was defeated and peace was once again restored.
After the battle, rogues, former GlacierClanners who joined Shatteredstar returned, asking to be allowed back in. They claimed to have been forced to join Shatteredstar, and called upon old debts in order to be allowed to return to their former home.
But a few of these cats turned on GlacierClan, and its new leader, again, and were killed for their actions. Some still remain in the Clan, but were true to their word, and live in peace. Now it seems as if GlacierClan's trouble with rogues is over... And a greater threat comes from within.
Old grudges brew hated within the hearts of some GlacierClanners. Old hate leads to a thirst for revenge. Hauntstar has fallen gravely ill, and some cats would see this as the perfect time to strike...
A tom named Darkstorm, once a good and loyal warrior and as yet unsuspected, has been making secret plans along with another warrior and an apprentice. All is in place and set to go when a group of kits and apprentices, sneaking out, come upon them in the forest. They stay hidden until two tom-kits, Ivorykit and Ravenkit, can bear it no longer. Ravenkit is quickly killed and the others, still hidden, race back to camp. They manage to carry Ivorykit back with them, but it is too late. Windfur can do nothing. The other Ravenkit, a shy she-kit, tries to help the medicine cat but must watch her friend die. Even so, she realizes that she wants to be a healer.
Only the next night, the group of apprentices sneak out again, this time going with Copperpaw to see her loner family. On the border they meet Darkstorm, and he chases them through a driving blizzard to the barn in loner lands. A fight ensues, and Copperpaw kills Darkstorm with the help of her mate, Dewpaw. Before he dies, Brokenflame arrives and realizes that his old friend had been brainwashed somehow. As eternity looms before Darkstorm he returns to his old self and says goodbye to Brokenflame. He also reveals that he killed Stream, Copperpaw's sister.
Without Darkstorm, the plan falls apart and Hauntstar seems safe. But it is only moons before both he and his deputy Blizzardclaw are killed by the rogue Carner. GlacierClan's trouble with rogues was not over, after all.
A new leader is chosen by StarClan: a young warrior by the name of Sapphirestar, and Taintedfaith becomes her deputy. As the clan is still reeling from this loss, Windfur, the old medicine cat, is called to StarClan, and only moons later her apprentice Ravencurse is killed by the raging river. It is the first sign of the floods to come.
Midnightdawn takes Ravencurse's place, with Silentpaw becoming her apprentice. They work hard to reassure their clan that StarClan is still watching over them, but the rising waters and strange weather has everyone worried. Prey is thin, even though it's newleaf, nearly greenleaf, and the rivers are beginning to go beyond their banks. More cats nearly drown, and it is clear that something is happening. Sapphirestar decides that something must be done, and the group of apprentices who caught out Darkstorm, now a tight group of young warriors, talk to the loners and report that they are worried, too.
Every clan has come to the same decision, for each clan takes all their warriors, apprentices, elders, kits, and queens to the next gathering. As the cats begin to speak, the rain begins to fall. Just as the cats decide to take shelter in Ripple and Raven's barn, the flood comes cascading down over the ridge. The clans escape out the other side of the clearing and into the higher ground of loner lands, but many are drowned.
All the survivors have a safe haven and prey...for now. But how long will it be before the floods reach loner lands, too? The clans can't live in a barn forever. Where will they go - and how many more will join StarClan before they get there?
